It’s Kinship Awareness Month in Indiana. That means DCS and our partners are working around the clock to tackle any questions or misconceptions caregivers may have. We would like to get in on the action! We believe children are less likely to experience trauma in kinship care under a close relative. That’s why it’s important for family members to step up when children are in need. Here are some resources and answers to frequently asked questions for anyone exploring kinship care!

Are you still eligible for kinship if you’re single?

Yes, you can be a Kinship Caregiver if you’re single

Do kinship caregivers receive financial support?

Yes, caregivers receive a stipend of $300 per month or $150 if the care is less than 15 days.

Can kinship caregivers be out of state, if the child is placed out of state?

Yes, and caregivers also are eligible for stipends as well out of state

Are there additional financial resources available for caregivers?

Yes, the child may be eligible for government assistance such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Food Stamps,
Hoosier Health wise (Medicaid), or Social Security benefits.
